The Star of David (Magen David or Magen David, literally "Shield of David") is the symbol of Judaism. It consists of two equilateral triangles - one pointing upward, the other downward. Today, it appears prominently on the flag of the State of Israel. According to Jewish tradition, it represents the emblem of King David and is also seen as a symbol of the Messiah (of Davidic lineage). One might say that the expression "Star of David" carries a historical resonance, while the expression "Seal of Solomon" evokes a more magical connotation, value, and atmosphere - same denotation, but distinct connotations. Until the 15th century, the Star of David, or Seal of Solomon, was a protective magical symbol depicted on amulets. It only became the representation of Judaism - as the crucifix is for Christianity - after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in the 15th century, aided by the spread of the printing press.
