What is the difference between 9-karat and 18-karat gold?

Pure gold, also known as 24-karat gold, is a malleable precious metal that cannot be used to make jewelry. To harden it, it must be alloyed with other metals such as copper or silver.

18-karat gold contains 75% pure gold, while 9-karat gold contains 37.5% pure gold. More and more 9-karat gold jewelry pieces are now being offered by artisan jewelers. This trend is driven by the rise in gold prices over the past decade and the decline in household purchasing power. It's worth noting that the price of 9-karat gold medals is far more affordable than 18-karat models.

To the naked eye, there is no visible difference between 9-karat and 18-karat gold. Over time, however, 9-karat gold tends to tarnish slightly. This is due to its silver content - silver is known to oxidize when exposed to oxygen.

What medal diameter should you choose?

Medal sizes range from approximately 10 to 30 mm in diameter. The most common size is 18 mm, though there are no hard-and-fast rules. The choice of diameter ultimately comes down to personal taste and budget.

To give you a sense of scale, a medal with a diameter of:

  • 16 mm is equivalent to the size of a 1-euro-cent coin.
  • 19 mm is equivalent to the size of a 2-euro-cent coin.
  • 21 mm is equivalent to the size of a 5-euro-cent coin.
