750/1000 (18K) yellow gold medal depicting Saint Catherine.
Daughter of an Alexandrian prince, Catherine was an elegant and exceptionally learned woman - earning her the title of patron saint of philosophers. Converted after a vision of the Virgin Mary, she resolved to plead the cause of Christians before Emperor Maximin. Struck by her beauty, he immediately proposed that she become his empress. Catherine refused - she had already pledged herself to another: Christ. Wounded in his pride, the emperor had her arrested and sentenced to torture on the breaking wheel. Yet her bonds miraculously fell away and the wheel shattered on the spot. She was martyred nonetheless. Her remains were later transferred to Mount Sinai, where a church was built, and then a basilica by Emperor Justinian in 527. She was venerated in the East from the 10th century onward, and later in the West through the Crusades. Legend has it that Saint Catherine was one of the voices heard by Joan of Arc.
Her name comes from the Greek word for "pure." She is depicted on a breaking wheel or holding the palm of martyrdom. Her feast day is November 25.
The perfect gift for a birth, baptism, or first communion.
Oval bail. Diameter: 15 mm. Average gold weight: 2.30 grams.
