The Ankh, or cross with a handle, is the Egyptian hieroglyph for the word "life." It is an attribute of the Egyptian gods, who may hold it by the loop or carry one in each hand with arms crossed over the chest. This symbol was known in Latin as crux ansata ("cross with a handle").
The ansate cross (crux ansata) is also used by the Coptic Church.
