There are 4 fundamental rules to know, and they go by the name of the 4Cs. These criteria will guide you in choosing the diamond ring that's right for you, based on your taste and, of course, your budget.
This refers to the weight of the stone, measured in carats. Be careful not to confuse this with the karat rating of a piece of jewelry, which indicates metal purity (75% gold for 18-karat and 37.5% for 9-karat). The carat weight of a diamond determines its dimensions: a 0.01-carat diamond measures 1.30 mm, a 0.05-carat diamond: 2.40 mm, a 0.10-carat diamond: 3.00 mm, a 0.50-carat diamond: 5.20 mm, a 1-carat diamond: 6.50 mm.
This criterion refers to the purity of the stone - one of the most important factors to consider alongside weight. Some impurities, known as inclusions, are visible to the naked eye, while others can only be detected using a magnifying loupe. Diamonds with no impurities are extremely rare and expensive. In practice, the number of inclusions within a gemstone determines its quality and value. The GIA, a recognized American diamond grading authority, has established a certification scale. Here is what each grade means:
- FL (Flawless): diamond with no inclusions, perfectly pure
- VVS1 and VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): very minor inclusions that are extremely difficult to detect under a loupe
- VS1 and VS2 (Very Slightly Included): minor inclusions that are difficult to see under magnification
- SI1 and SI2 (Slightly Included): inclusions visible under a loupe
- I1, I2, and I3 (Included): inclusions visible to the naked eye
As the name suggests, this criterion defines the color of the stone. The more transparent the diamond, the higher its quality. A grading scale using letters from D to Z has been established. The letter D corresponds to a colorless diamond of exceptional whiteness, the letter H indicates a standard white, and from M onward the diamond begins to show color, with increasing yellow tinting.
The final criterion is the cut of the diamond. This stone can take many different shapes, and depending on how it is cut, it will reflect light differently. This criterion matters most when buying a solitaire diamond ring. It is also the only criterion that depends on human craftsmanship rather than nature. A perfectly cut diamond will reflect light flawlessly and produce an exceptional brilliance.
