750/1000 Yellow Gold (18K) medal with a sandblasted finish depicting Saint Nicholas. This medal features two distinct finishes: a polished finish on the background for brilliance and shine, and a sandblasted finish applied to the figure of the Saint to set it apart from the polished background.
(The sandblasting technique creates a matte visual effect.)
Born in 270 in Patara, Asia Minor (present-day Turkey), Nicholas came from a wealthy family within the Christian community. Orphaned at a young age, he chose to give away his inheritance to charitable causes. Nicholas then decided to become a monk and quickly rose to become Bishop of Myra (present-day Demre, Turkey). In 303, Emperor Diocletian brought religious freedom to an end. Christians became the targets of a brutal persecution. With extraordinary generosity, Nicholas took it upon himself to relieve the physical and spiritual suffering of his fellow believers. He devoted particular care to children and young women without dowries, becoming their protector. He too fell victim to persecution and was forced into exile. Fortunately, the rise of Constantine restored freedom of worship in 313. Nicholas could finally live in safety - and, above all, according to his convictions. In 325, at the Council of Nicaea, Nicholas was among the Church Fathers who proclaimed the divinity of Jesus against Arianism. He died shortly after, in Myra.
His veneration spread rapidly throughout the West following the transfer of his remains to Bari, Italy, in 1087. One of his relics was brought to Lorraine by the knight Aubert de Varangéville at Port. Saint Nicholas thus became the patron saint of Lorraine - a role he already held for Russia and Greece.
His name comes from the Greek for "victory" and "people." Saint Nicholas is depicted with three children. His feast day is December 6.
The perfect gift for a birth, baptism, or first communion.
Oval bail. Diameter: 15 mm. Average gold weight: 2.30 grams.
