Matthew is the patron saint of customs officers and the seventh apostle of Christ. He is also the first to have written one of the four Gospels. His name comes from the Hebrew "gift of God."

Becker depicts him holding a book in his right hand, accompanied by an angel said to have inspired the Gospel. Saint Matthew appears deep in thought, listening intently.
