The Occitan cross, or Cross of Languedoc, is the emblem of Occitania. This equal-armed cross appears on the coats of arms of great families from the south of France, as well as on the arms of Languedoc and Toulouse between the 14th and 18th centuries. The ends of the cross are adorned with 12 "roundels" open to many interpretations.
Many historians today indicate that this cross first appeared in Provence - in Venasque in the 12th century, according to Henri Rolland - in the circle of the Viscounts of Marseille as early as the 11th century, according to Antoine de Rufi, and possibly with Guilhem I of Provence, known as Guilhem the Liberator, who defeated the Saracens at La Garde-Freinet in 972.
