750/1000 Yellow Gold (18K) medal with a sandblasted effect depicting Saint Rémi. This medal features two distinct finishes: a polished finish on the medal's background for brilliance and shine, and a sandblasted finish on the Saint to set him apart from the polished background.
Born in the diocese of Laon (Picardy) in 437, Rémi came from a noble family of Gaulish origin. At his birth, a blind hermit foretold a great destiny for the family's son - and miraculously recovered his sight on the spot. After completing his theology studies in Reims, Rémi was elected bishop at the age of twenty-two. At that time, the king of the Salian Franks, the famous Clovis, was married to the gentle Burgundian Clothilde, who endeavored to convert him to Christianity. In 496, a conflict with the Alamans (a Germanic people) forced him into battle near Tolbiac (near Cologne). Clovis vowed to convert if his wife's God granted him victory - and his enemies were duly defeated. It was Rémi who had the singular honor of baptizing Clovis along with his three thousand soldiers, thereby placing the kingdom under the authority of the Church. Henceforth known as "the Apostle of the Franks," he went on to establish bishoprics, create missions, and transform the Frankish territory into a Catholic nation. He passed away in 530 and rests in the cathedral of Reims, built to house his tomb - which is why it later became the coronation cathedral of the kings of France. As a side note, Saint Rémi is considered one of the five Catholic patron saints of France, alongside Saint Martin, Saint Denis, Saint Joan of Arc, and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.
His name comes from the Latin for "he who heals." Saint Rémi is depicted as a bishop baptizing Clovis, with a dove bringing the holy chrism (consecrated oil). His feast day is October 1st.
The perfect gift for a birth, baptism, or communion.
