Sinn is a brand with a rock-solid reputation, producing timepieces of exceptionally high quality. Founded in Germany in 1961, it crafts robust and reliable watches built to perform even in the harshest conditions. Among its instrument watches is the 717 Chronograph, whose design draws inspiration from the Nabo 17 ZM of the 1970s, originally developed for the German Air Force's Tornado program in the late 1970s. The 717.010 presented here is a winner of the "Excellent Product Design 2022" at the German Design Award and the "iF Design Award 2022". It's an impressive watch featuring a round case crafted in microblasted stainless steel with a black anti-scratch coating applied using Tegiment Technology. This commanding case measures 45 mm in diameter and 15.30 mm thick, weighing 114 g. It is complemented by an integrated bidirectional bezel with a luminescent marker and a white minute track. Its knurling makes it easy to operate by hand from the outside of the case. Everything is topped by a flat sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective coating, ensuring optimal legibility. The knurled screw-down crown sits in its classic position at 3 o'clock for hands and date adjustment, flanked by two pump-style pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock that emphasize this timepiece's vintage character. The screw-down case back delivers a water resistance of 20 ATM, in compliance with the technical requirements of DIN 8310. It's also worth noting that this watch features Ar dehumidification technology - condensation resistance that enhances functional reliability and keeps the crystal fog-free.
This watch features a beautifully designed dial inspired by the historic model, engineered for maximum legibility. Its matte black background contrasts sharply with white markers, creating a striking look. The outer edge displays a minute track with bold white graduations and stick indices for each hour - with 6 and 12 o'clock marked by large Arabic numerals. At the center, 4 hands take their place: two in white indicating the hours (short hand) and minutes (long hand), joined by two in orange tracking chronograph minutes (small hand) and chronograph seconds (large hand). A sub-dial at 9 o'clock displays running seconds via a small white hand, while a date window at 3 o'clock shows the date in white. All markers are coated with a luminescent treatment for clear readability in low-light conditions. Sinn's signature is applied at 3 o'clock as a finishing touch.
This model is powered by a precisely engineered automatic movement - the Sinn SZ01 caliber, based on the Valjoux 7750. Fitted with 25 jewels, it beats at 28,800 (4 Hz) vibrations per hour and offers a 42-hour power reserve. The movement features a seconds-stop function and is antimagnetic in accordance with DIN 8309.
The case is paired with a robust yet refined cowhide leather strap. Its black color and vintage look reinforce the watch's charming character, ensuring all-day wearing comfort. The strap is elevated by orange stitching at the lugs and measures 24 mm wide. It fastens with a pin buckle for a secure fit around the wrist.
This model offers a water resistance of 20 atmospheres, or 200 meters - making it a true dive-ready companion. Built to handle underwater activities, it can take on freediving and high-pressure water jets without breaking a sweat. Shower, bath, lap swimming, and freediving are all fair game. For scuba diving with tanks, we recommend a timepiece with a higher water resistance rating. Always avoid operating the crown or pushers while submerged to preserve the integrity of the movement.
